Hearts of Iron IV

Very Good

Grand strategy, lots of good mods, alternate history simulator, play as nearly any country you like. Fascist Ireland? Communist Australia? it can be done.

Wargame: Airland Battle

Not really my type of game. The unit models are nicely made, very real. I only bought it because it was on sale.

Kerbal Space Program
 –

Tinkerers Dream

Such a well crafted gem for what it is, a space program sandbox. Transcends even PC gaming - everyone would like this game as long as you are using your imagination, are prepared to fail a few times before GREAT SUCCESS, and don't expect your hand to be held the whole time.

Europa Universalis IV: Common Sense
 –

Highly recommended

This is one of the "tier 1", highly recommended DLCs for the game, according to reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/eu4/comments/5et9si/which_dlcs_should_i_get_a_help_for_people_new_to/

Good to get with a discount, one star deducted just for the ungodly number of DLCs that Paradox released for the game, and the fact that recent patches made it more-or-less mandatory to have Common Sense (the free base game apparently had new "challenges" introduced that can only be addressed through mechanics introduced in paid DLC).

Europa Universalis IV

Brilliant strategy game

I won't lie, this game is hard to get into (I tried picking it up several times it the past, but got annoyed with losing too much), but once you do, you can easily sink hundreds of hours into it. The world is richly detailed, the geography and history are largely accurate, and you get a significantly different experience depending on your starting nation and the goals you have in mind (near-endless re-playability in my mind).

On the fence as to whether or not to detract a star (eventually elected not to), because of the ridiculous state of the DLCs. You need to do a heck of a lot of research to figure out which DLCs are worthwhile, and a lot of DLC packs are largely useless (containing mostly unit texture packs). Otherwise, the base game has a ton of content for the price anyway, but you will very likely feel the need to get the expansions once you get a taste of the original.

Cities: Skylines - Mass Transit
 –

Nice to have, but not super-important

I very much like the idea that they're still doing work on this game, and expanding it with great features (though some of them already existed as mods). It must be costly to keep the dev team working, so I don't mind spending the ten bucks every now and then if it keeps attention on the game high.

I'm going to give it five stars though, because I also *very* much like the approach of releasing some of the features as free updates. And indeed, I consider some of the free updates to the base game to be quite essential quality-of-life improvements.

The new transit options look good, and it's always fun to tinker with diverse options, but they're not really super-useful (if you're a really mechanics-oriented player). I ended up not using monorails all that much, because the stations take up a lot of space, generate noise pollution AND cost loads in upkeep. It's much more efficient to use something like trams instead.

Haven't used blimps or cable cars yet, but I can't imagine they help much with elimination gridlock (though I might be proven wrong). They seem more situational than anything else.

Cities: Skylines
 –

Fun, but a bit easy

This is a great game, the graphics are great and it definitely scratches the creation itch you might have. That being said I feel the game doesn't have a lot in the way of a challenge. I'm by no means a great city creator, but my city is thriving and I haven't put much thought into it to be honest. It's my first trial by fire run and I'm killing it...kind of takes away my motivation to start a new city. All that being said, there are a ton of micromanagement options for those who like delving deep so it has potential to eat up your life. Fun game but be weary of the longevity if you're a casual. 8.5/10

Hard West

Old West tactical rpg with a twist, what?

Simply put, it's cowboys-and-Indians-and-demons-and-zombies X-Com 2. It's hard, if fun and it's got it's own flair that I thoroughly enjoy.

Sid Meier's Civilization IV: The Complete Edition

Used to love this game

This game is AWESOME, but this port is shit.

I have an iMac with an i7 3,4ghz processor, 8gb ram and a graphicscard with 2gb of video ram, but this game doesn't run smoothly at all.

it is simply unplayable

Militia

Excellent tactics game

For a very simple ruleset and equally simple boards, this game is a delight akin to chess with fewer moves and quicker play. The ladder method of "moving up" rewards each victory as hard-earned and makes losses truly hurt; highly recommended.

Pretty good.

As usual with DLCs, it is over priced for what it is. However, the content is certainly useful and adds to the game well. Buy when its on sale.

Fantasy Mosaics 8: New Adventure
 –

No powerups

I like mosaic games, and this one has some nice touches with the different color patterns and so on. But it keeps showing hints referring to powerups and THERE ARE NO POWERUPS! I'm guessing this Mac game started as a phone app where you can buy powerups, but there is no such option in the desktop version. Sloppy designing.

Europa Universalis IV: Mare Nostrum

Nice addition for maritime states

Nice DLC if you ever play a nation that was dependent on trade, or piracy and pillage in some cases, but also nice for the big naval powers as it expands the systems in a few good directions

Great game!

This is a fun TBSG in the spirit of the old Emperors of the Fading Suns style. Pretty indepth, though the tutorial leaves a bit to be desired. If you're not familiar with these types of games, expect some confusion to start...
