Build a Better Space Empire in Stellaris: Utopia

The stars have called you for millennia and now you walk among them. A universe of possibilities is open to your species as it takes its first fitful steps into the great unknown. Here you can turn your back on the divisive politics of the home planet. Here you can build something new. Here you can unify your people and build that perfect society.

Only in space can you build Utopia.

Utopia is the first major expansion for Stellaris, the critically acclaimed science fiction grand strategy game from Paradox Development Studio. As the title suggests, Utopia gives you new tools to develop your galactic empire and keep your people (or birdfolk or talking mushrooms) happy. Push your species further out into the galaxy with new bonuses for rapid exploration or stay closer to home before striking out against all who would challenge you.

Utopia brings a host of changes to the core of Stellaris, including:

Build wondrous structures in your systems including Dyson Spheres and ring worlds, bringing both prestige and major advantages to your race.

Habitat Stations:
Build “tall” and establish space stations that will house more population, serving the role of planets in a small and confined empire.

Ascension Perks:
Collect Unity points and adopt Traditions to unlock Ascension Perks that allow you to customize your empire in unique ways. Follow one of the three Ascension Paths and achieve Biological Mastery, give up your biological forms in a Synthetic Evolution, or unlock the full psionic potential of your species through Transcendance.

Influence primitive civilizations and make them adopt your ethics through the use of observation stations, preparing them for enlightenment or annexation.

Advanced Slavery:
Maximize the benefits of slavery by choosing specific roles for enthralled species. Have them serve other Pops as Domestic Servants, fight for your empire as Battle Thralls, or keep them as Livestock to feed your people.

Advanced Governments:
Adopt unique civics and authorities for your government. Play as a Fanatic Purifier and shun all diplomacy, become a Hive Mind to avoid political strife or create a multi-species empire born of Syncretic Evolution.

  1. Lovely addition
    by Victor G.13, Bulgaria - Jan 30th 2018

DEPTH! No, not the game, but that is sort of what this game actually lacked.
My favourite part are the ascension perks. TL:DR they are what you get when you complete a tradition tree. Their benefits are pretty universal and you choose one yourself - be it border range, research speed or something much more grandeur.
Other thing this DLC provides are new government types. Most are pretty... radical. Another allows you to give your species friends. That is a pretty big gap between eating others and giving your species friends. Not a big fan of eating aliens tho.
Next.. Right, indoctrination. In the base game, you're allowed to uplift species that are both on your own planets, or on their separate worlds. Usually they get other.. ideas, or ethics, which ends up messing up with your factions. Indoctrination prevents that by "forcing' them to adopt your ethics.
The advanced slavery part is what allows you to eat other aliens.. But it offers more things too, like domestic servants.
Habitats and Megastructures are the "grandeur" things that I mentioned earlier. They cost a lot AND take forever to be built, but their yields... are amazing. Science, credits, your own planets in a way. (Keep in mind ringworlds count towards your cored systems limit).
This is way too mandatory to be left aside. Well, not really, but what it offers is what the game needs for the depth. Much better when coupled with the Leviathans story pack.

  2. Good DLC for an excellent game
by Miltiadis Apostolidis, Greece - Dec 22nd 2017

This DLC is the first "real" DLC for the excellent Stellaris. It adds a lot of useful additions in the main game like megastructures and habitats. While some of the game's DLC were cosmetic(Plantoids, Humanoid ships) this one is necessary if you wish to enjoy the game at its full potential.

  3. New Level
    by PeterBarsk, Germany - Dec 4th 2017

This DLC brings Stellaris up to a new level. Some features are in the core game but things like ascention perks and megastructures make this DLC worth every penny.

Definitely worthwhile DC. Tons of content, though maybe wait for a sale.

  6. Worth it.
    by dfox2014, USA - Sep 25th 2017

I held out for a long time on this DLC but it is worth it in the end. I still say it should be bought on sale, just like any DLC but it adds a lot for mid-late game play and makes building tall a lot more achieveable.

  7. Excellent
    by Gianmaria C., Italy - Sep 15th 2017

This is an excellent dlc that adds a lot of contents to the base game. Megastructures, new civics, ascension perks and so on.

  9. Deeper, but...
    by Migol, Poland - Sep 1st 2017

This DLC adds quite a bit of needed depth to Stellaris. Sadly, I was missing somethis "wow" in it. I guess I would say that this is supposed to be in base game, not as paid DLC. Also, pricing policy Paradox is doing makes no sense to wait for better offer.

  10. Decent content
    by anabwana, Finland - Sep 1st 2017

Since the base game is fundamentally great but a little lacking in immersive content after the exploration phase is over, this DLC adds nice stuff and improves the game even though there isn't really anything major included.

  11. Moar content
    by Mms .., Poland - Aug 8th 2017

Fills some empty space and makes more things to do mid and late game. Not sure if it's worth for full price ($20) tho.

This is a good one, give your race a focus for later, and the dyson sphere is really a boost

  13. Solid expansion
    by fanest, Slovenia - Jun 23rd 2017

Megastructures are probably the main selling point and they are well done. In general this DLC adds a bit more flavour in the endgame.

  14. Worth it but...
    by SteveS, USA - May 2nd 2017

It doesn't add a hell of a lot to make it worth a $20 price tag. That's, what, half the cost of the entire base game? Well, I got it on sale for $16 and using a $5 store credit it was only $11. It was worth it at that, for sure.

Anyway, 4-star $20 DLC for a 5-star $40 game. If the math works for you then I guess it's worth it. If not, wait for a sale. Paradox has frequent sales.

Stellaris: Utopia brings many needed additions and a lot of depth to the game. Love it. Price may be a bit steep though.
