Description

Crusader Kings II: Horse Lords is the ninth expansion for the best-selling strategy RPG Crusader Kings II, and offers expanded gameplay based around the dynamic and vibrant nomadic cultures of the Eurasian steppes.

Introducing new systems and game mechanics such as a new government form as well as the possibility of having tributary states, this expansion will also provide you with the opportunity to saddle up and build your empire from horseback.

Expanding and controlling trade on the ancient Silk Road in order to finance your conquests is an option - but beware - others will also try to gain control of these lucrative routes, and enemy raiders may try to destroy your trade posts if you don’t guard them well.

Can you build a Pax Mongolica and dominate Eurasia, connecting East and West under your rule and creating a new era of prosperity? Or will you be the terrible sword that swats down what others have built, crushing all in your path?
The time has come to take the reins of history and become the Great Khan!
  • New Central Asian cultures: Tarim Basin and large parts of Mongolia added to map.
  • Nomadic government available for steppe cultures. These function in a radically different way from sedentary societies - you manage populations instead of holdings, and armies are raised based on population size. Also, the ruler’s power must be balanced against the interests of the various Clans within the realm (Clans are not normal vassals, but rather distinct families and factions within the nomad group).
  • Over a hundred new events add extra color and flair to the Steppes and Central Asia.
  • Non-nomadic rulers will have special options for combating nomads, such as constructing forts in wild enemy lands.
  • The Silk Road, with corresponding dynamic trade mechanics and conflicts.
  • New nomad mercenaries. Send your unruly sons or brothers away as soldiers of fortune.
  • Landless raiding adventurers may appear and harass a region for a time or try to conquer land and settle.
  • New diplomacy option: Tributary States.

  2. Crusader Kings II: Horse Lords
by XXXXXXXXX, United Kingdom - Jun 7th 2018

Playing as a nomad with Horse Lords enabled feels like a relatively fresh gameplay experience and which thankfully doesn't feel like a forced add-on but rather a more natural gameplay addition. The new clan mechanics are dynamic and have enough depth to keep a long time player like myself interested. Not to mention that the patch which came alongside Horse Lords really does speed up the gameplay and adds a variety of interesting free changes.

  3. Horse Lords is only worth buying if you want to play nomadic hordes
by João Costa, Portugal - Jun 2nd 2018

The core of this DLC is playing a nomadic horde, which is also the main problem. If you don't want to be the next genghis khan then this DLC is almost pointless to you.
Do notice that without this DLC there are no nomadic tribes in the game to play against.
Playing as a nomadic is good but a tad to easy when compared to the base christian counrties.
IMO worth buying if you want to play as a horde, but useless for anyone else.

  5. A mediocre addition
    by nabbe99, Sweden - Jan 4th 2018

This expansion can totaly be skipped because it serves no purpose in a game suposed to simulate the political situation and court intrigue in the dark ages. Playing as a nomad isn't really that fun and if you are playing in europe this DLC only adds the mercenary band system that you can live without.

  6. Meh
    by Shirazmatas, Sweden - Dec 29th 2017

I'm not really a fan of nomads and all that and feel that even with this dlc the experience of playin a nomad feels too generic compared to other countries. I wouldnt rate this as the most important dlc to have for ck2

  7. Useful DLC for a classic game
by Miltiadis Apostolidis, Greece - Nov 24th 2017

A very interesting addition to the classic Crusader Kings 2 it allows you to play as the mongol hordes that "visited" Europe during the 13th century.

  8. Inherit the Legacy of Ghengis Khan
    by JRespaldiza, USA - Apr 26th 2017

This DLC for CK2 introduces the Horde mechanics and a different spin on CK2's original medieval government. Managing your vassals is more important than ever as you balance keeping them happy with not allowing them to grow too strong. The additional parts of the map that are added give you a base to potentially create a horde that rivals the great Mongol Hordes of the time. Will you be able to conquer all the known world?

  9. Love playing Nomads
    by Tyler L.1, USA - Apr 10th 2017

I bought this with Reaper's Due and Conclave when all 3 were on sale, and they were great deals. Horse Lords allows playing of the new Nomadic government, and it is a ton of fun, perhaps even a bit too strong. New mechanics to deal with, while commanding very strong Cavalry units. I recommend this DLC if you are a CK2 fan looking for something other than feudal to play.

  10. Get the horde out of my game!
    by Batavorn, Netherlands - Feb 10th 2017

About fifteen dlc packs ago Crusader Kings II was limited to European, Christian, feudal rulers. It made for a challenging but ultimately fun simulation of medieval life.

Since that time this has been expanded with more religions (which usually went smoothly) and different government types which have all been flawed in some way: Playing as in Islamic ruler was both easy and boring for example.

In the horse lords you can play as the ruler of a nomadic tribe. Unfortunately the new mechanics are a convoluted mess, making this dlc a frustrating experience. To make things worse the dlc offers very little new content for non-nomadic rulers.

  13. Big DLC, with a lot to offer.
by Allie Collins, USA - Mar 13th 2016

I find the Mongols to be interesting, so this makes for a great DLC. This is definitely a must have DLC, that is loaded with new mercenaries, cultures, and events. The Steppes are a fun area. I recommend checking this DLC out.

  15. Good buy
    by raven3113, USA - Feb 29th 2016

Adds a lot of map to the game. Adds the ability to force your neighbors to be tributaries, meaning they have to pay you a hefty portion of their income. Also adds the Silk Road, which brings trade through a lot of eastern europe.
