Description

Common Sense is the fifth major expansion for Europa Universalis IV and focuses on diplomacy and the internal development of nations. This addition allows you to peacefully develop your nation and build a 'tall' empire, whilst also giving you the tools to execute grand diplomacy. Game changing religious features add depth and intriguing complexity to the gameplay.

The ability to work closely with your subjects and better control them through interactions and decrees should make common sense for anyone with designs to get to terms with the internal struggles of constitutional monarchies.
  • New Religious Gameplay: New mechanics for Protestants and Buddhists deepen the religious gameplay. Protestants acquire the ability to create their own national church by gaining religious tradition, whilst Buddhists must maintain balance between high and low karma (high karma ruler becomes detached from the world, while a low karma ruler loses trust of their soldiers).
  • Devotion: Theocracies have Devotion based on how closely they adhere to their faith, with high Devotion increasing prestige, papal influence and tax income. Theocracies choose their successors from 6 different alternatives, such as an influential preacher or a noble's son.
  • Subject Interactions: Over 15 new special actions that can be taken towards subjects, such as installing your own dynasty on the thrones of your vassals.
  • Parliament: Parliamentary rule for constitutional republics and monarchs, and a special parliamentary government for England. Grant your provinces seat in parliament and bribe them to vote on issues that strengthen your nation.
  • Free Cities of the HRE: Small nations in the Holy Roman Empire can be granted the status of Free City.
  • Government Ranks: All nations are ranked, from small Duchies to great Empires, and can increase their government rank as they grow in power.

  1. Must Have DLC
    by wander00, Australia - Dec 7th 2018

Like everyone else has mentioned, this is one of the two must have DLC's.

  2. One of three or four 'must have' DLC
    by Dubbs09, USA - Nov 29th 2018

Along with Art of War and Rights of man, this is one of the must have DLC for one of the best strategy games of all time. Get on sale and be prepared for the steep learning curve. But it is absolutely worth it.

  3. Necessary DLC
    by Albert G.2, Spain - Sep 28th 2018

It's a must buy because it allows you to develop provinces, adds flavour to England (constitutional monarchy) and adds additional mechanics for protestants. However, I recommend buying it on sale, since it doesnt add that much to the base game.

  4. A must have
    by Hallanvaara, Finland - Sep 11th 2018

This is one of the two must have dlcs for EU4. Granted, things this dlc adds (developing provinces) should've been in the base game but alas they weren't so grab it to complete your game.

  5. Essential dlc for eu4
    by Shirazmatas, Sweden - Sep 6th 2018

This dlc whether you like it or not, is necessary for a good experience in eu4. It adds the opportunity to grow tall and reworks to some very necessary gameplay experiences

Fine add-on, for quite a nice price, but wouldn't recommend buying it without a discount.

  8. Finally another DLC that actually does stuff
    by Lan G., Netherlands - Jan 24th 2018

Common sense basically adds variety to the HRE and the interactions with your vassals. Its decent for the price and i'd suggest you take this one

  9. A clear improvement
    by Jonas S.8, Denmark - Nov 20th 2017

I bought it for the control with the subjects, its a clear improvement but you should still wait for a sale

  10. A great expansion (and a necessary one)
    by Air H., Latvia - Nov 19th 2017

You mostly want Common Sense for the development feature, which will make playing nations outside of Europe not a pain. -1 star for that. Other features are great however, boasting improvements to the Protestant religion and making vassal managment a lot more fun and in-depth.

  11. Worked beautifully!
    by Carl V., Denmark - Oct 28th 2017

This is perhaps the most important expansion pack adding major improvements like working with province development. This expansion adds some common sense to how the game works. Buying it here worked very well.

  12. Highly recommended
    by Cristi P., Romania - Sep 5th 2017

This is one of the "tier 1", highly recommended DLCs for the game, according to reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/eu4/comments/5et9si/which_dlcs_should_i_get_a_help_for_people_new_to/

Good to get with a discount, one star deducted just for the ungodly number of DLCs that Paradox released for the game, and the fact that recent patches made it more-or-less mandatory to have Common Sense (the free base game apparently had new "challenges" introduced that can only be addressed through mechanics introduced in paid DLC).

  15. Paradox needs some common sense
    by troleibuzul, Romania - Jul 8th 2017

Unfortunately the game cannot be played without this dlc. It lets you develop provinces which is very very essential and after the introduction of institutions it's impossible to play outside Europe without it.
