  1. Disappointing
by Adam Voss, USA - May 23rd 2018

A very light strategy game, not really a bad game, just not my thing.

  2. Good turn-based strategy
    by Spiro, Poland - Dec 29th 2017

If you like turn-based strategy, it's a game for you.
The game has a lot of potential, but the gameplay is simply: buy improvements - use it - lead the battles. Sometimes it's boring, sometimes relaxing.

  3. Enjoyable casual tactics game
    by Psyringe, Germany - Sep 23rd 2017

Starships is a casual turn-based tactics game in space. You build and equip your ships and control them in short turn-based battles. It also features a similarly casual strategic layer with different factions fighting for control over star systems, but it's far from the full-fledged empire management of a 4X game - rather, it's just a framework for getting the technologies and resources that you need to build and maintain your fleet.

The game provides the experience of a strategic space conquest campaign, while keeping the overall complexity fairly low - but still high enough to keep it interesting. As such, I found it pretty enjoyable, though definitely more relaxing than challenging. Balancing seems to be off though (my fighters appeared to be much more powerful than any other type of weapon), and the AI is terrible. Replayability is limited due to the lack of more complex mechanics.

by Pixel Paintbrush, USA - Aug 28th 2017

Not sure why this game gets all the hate, I found it quite normal, boring at times, but pretty decent.

  6. Exciting Game
    by George T., Greece - Mar 19th 2017

Do not let reviews fool you, this is a fantastic game. Just know what you are purchasing. This is NOT a 4x game.

  7. Great opportunity, missed slam-dunk
    by Duvi, Hungary - Mar 19th 2017

The Starships essence of the struggle, and actually only really good and really enjoyable part of this game. Everything else is too simple.

  8. Starships
    by Bebeto, Romania - Dec 4th 2016

Starships is a game with a lot of potential, but falls short of what it could be. Buy on sale.

  11. Good Game for Slower Players
by Greg Michelson, USA - Feb 28th 2016

If you are an older, slower Star Trek fan, this game is a good one. It is a turn based game. Graphics are great. There are some choices to be made as you amass points in 5 categories. Good choice at the beginning is ENERGY and then METALS. Credits are good and sometimes hard to come by. My favorite WONDER is the Dual Command, which allows two actions per turn. Explore them all and learn your best ones. SCIENCE upgrades are both offensive and defensive. I go with offensive first and push the Torpedeo and Engine options. Some battles can take a bit of time to finish and if you are not strategically placed, you may lose Star Systems. Larger size games with fewere opponents are somewhat easier to play. Many ways to play and win and lose and learn.

  12. It's a very fun and easy to play game
    by lawrence1988, United Kingdom - Feb 26th 2016

A good light game to if you want a break from "serious" gaming. feels a lot like playing a boardgame. i think its unfair that a lot of people dislike this because of mismatched expectations. looking forward to more starships or further depth.

  14. Simple 4x Game
by Elias Chapelle, USA - May 5th 2015

Starships is a simplified but enjoyable 4x game in the mold of Master of Orion II, the gold standard of space 4x games. Although it appears incomplete, it is still an enjoyable game of exploration, expansion, economic development, and combat. It's appeal rests primarily in its clean game play with little complexity or a long lisf of things you need to remember that has made other games of this type such a dreary exercise of game play. There are other 4x games that play much better, such as Starbase Orion, but few that are as relaxing as this non-real-time turn-based game.
It needs many improvements though. 1) The little triangle you need to click on to sell goods at the market to speed up sales is easy to miss 2) Your game progress and the progress of the other civilizations are not displayed very well which makes it difficult to make decisions. (3) The ending of the game is too abrupt and unexplained. (4)The game seems to be incomplete as well- the mechanics work well but the deeper elements that are needed for this type of game appear to be missing.
The game is also overpriced at its $15.00 sell point.

  15. Сompletely unpretentious
by Sixth Praetorian, Switzerland - Mar 17th 2015

My expectation of the game (SID!) was much higher. The game idea is extremely flat, all missions are similar, battles are unmanageable because of poor maps. Ship upgrade, last hope, appeared fully automated, you can only choose the number of ship parts.
After CIV5 and XCOM this game looks cheap.
