  1. Old School Gameplay, New School Graphics
by Daniel Steven Oles, USA - Dec 30th 2017

The Secret of Monkey Island is NOT an easy game, coming from another era which involves a ton of trial and error, timed actions, and flatout moon logic (one puzzle requires you to do something so obvious and yet so impossible you can forget to try it). The graphics are very pretty and stylized in a fashion by now synonomous with the series with a few short cuts (characters in cutscenes don't move their mouths) which is by no means a deal breaker. The only issues I found were a few inherent in the orginal game which were ported faithfully to the new version: LOTS of backtracking, massive maps with not a lot in them sometimes, and some pixel hunting. Still excellent humor, full dialogue, great music, and a satisfying experience!

  2. I wanted to love it.....
by Jack Fate, United Kingdom - Nov 24th 2017

Like many, I played and loved this game years ago and was looking to recature the glory days. However despite having some fun moments, gaming has moved on around it. With so many other titles out there with so much more to offer I simply couldn't justify coming back to Monkey Island, no matter how much my 10 year-old self wanted too.

  3. That's the second biggest monkey head I've ever seen!

A great way to replay this classic game, either with the original graphics or the new high resolution ones. Great that you can switch between them at will!

  4. Just a piece of museum
    by Hermit64, Spain - Nov 10th 2014

I played this game in the 90's and I enjoyed it very much. But not now. 20 years are a lot of years for a game. Can you imagine how games will be within 20 years? Not me. The pace of the game is very slow. The story is lightly fun, but childish. The interface is clumsy, primitive. Many of the puzzles are illogic, most of them just plain. The graphics are too simple, with static backgrounds and bad animations. Nothing really interesting happens, so the urge to continue doesn't exists. Why did I like this game som much in it's time? I suppose it was as comparison to others at the moment. But, I repeat, not now. Only useful to collect.

  5. Great game
    by Sonny101, United Kingdom - Jun 2nd 2014

Love all the Monkey Island games and I'm very happy about this special edition one. You learn how Guybrush and Elane meet for the first time and get yourself into great adventures in a graphic who fits into the time.

  6. Oh, the memories
by the dark wanderer, Australia - Jun 27th 2013

What a delight to be able to revisit one of the most memorable games from my childhood. The reboot of this game has been just as great to play as the original was back in the day. I love the ability to be able to easily switch between the old and new graphics, but I did spend most of my time playing with the the new style. The voiceover makes the game and its wacky humour even more enjoyable and engaging.
I have to admit that I didn't find the puzzles as hard as I remembered them, and the hint system can take the satisfaction out of figuring them out yourself. You can just keep hitting the 'h' button for hints until you're told exactly what to do. There's no incentive to only use hints when you really need them, so temptation to just just keep hitting that button does win out sometimes. The only other gripe I have with the game, as I recall having back when I played the original, is that it can be tediously slow at times, especially when moving between places on the map. There's a fair amount of back and forth involved so it would've been nice if the travel speed was increased, particualrly between places you've already visited. Dialougue can also be a bit slow at times, although you can skip right to the end of some of the conversations.
I got through the game in just over 4 hours so it's not that long, but anyone who played the original will definitely get a kick out of visiting Monkey Island again. I'm not sure new players would get quite as much enjoyment, but I'd still recommend it to them.

  7. Two extreme thumbs up!!
    by Razdin, USA - May 5th 2011

The first computer games to capture my imagination were Adventure genre. LucasArts - Secret of Monkey Island, Indiana Jones TLC, and FOA. Sierra's Space Quest, King's Quest, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Gabriel Knight. It's so refreshing and exciting to think they could be revamped for the times and return for the fans and new generations alike..

This was done really well and includes voice, Im all over LeChucks Revenge.

    Bring back adventure gaming!!! *****

  9. Great classic adventure game
by Katerina Arrington, USA - Mar 5th 2011

One of the very few games that actually made me laugh out loud. This is great for point-and-click adventure fans but also has an entertaining story and fun characters for those who aren't so familiar with the genre. Love the Monkey Island series!
