– Best ValueEven at full price of $5 this game is a steal. Reading about people complaining about saving? It auto-saves your progress between missions. I do recommend changing the controls however, personnel preference really to use WASD to move. Get it, you wont regret it! by Huck702, USA - Jan 5th 2015

– Strategy at it's best.Having not played any if the earlier games in the series I was unsure what to expect. The game gets you involved from the start and you can really see your progress. The random challenges that appear be it natural disasters or those pesky rebels keep you on your toes. My only gripe would be the limitation to two maps. by alexshepherd87, United Kingdom - Jan 4th 2015

– Fun, simple game!A nice game to pass the time. It gets repetitive after a while but it's still worth it if you enjoy town-building games. by Wondering About That, USA - Jan 4th 2015

– Starts out cute, sours quicklyCute art and engaging storyline. Unfortunately, as you advance through the games' stages, the puzzles become ridiculously difficult—not in a satisfying, brain-crunching kind of way, but in a totally random way that defies the game's own internal logic. If you want a smart, gorgeous, rewardingly difficult game with elegant mechanics, skip Journey of a Roach and check out Limbo instead. by rockthetropics, USA - Jan 3rd 2015

– Dull, short but cheapOkay firstly for .69 you can't really complain, it's a diverting hour or so....the HO scenes whilst nicely drawn can't really make up for the fact that this is a really short game, can understand why they've reduced it so extensively it would be hard to see how they could expect more than a couple of dollars for this one...ultimately you just feel like you're going back and forth all the time doing the same things, there are no suprises but a lot of tedium. Zero replayability, can't say i recommend it. by Moo, France - Jan 3rd 2015

– Classic city building with a twistI love the Tropico series for their light sense of humor and innovative game design. I loved that this game isn't as resourse heavy as others, and runs smoothly on my computer. The game has a good amount of replayability, but sometimes the jokes do get a little old. However, I love the graphics, the design, and the interface. A truly five-star game! by JamesonV, USA - Jan 3rd 2015

– You never know what you'll get with this gameWhen the game works, I enjoy it a lot. Sadly, it seems to be a complete crapshoot whether the game will work. Specifically the fort may or may not finish building and if it doesn't finish building, you really can't do the game. by VIXSTAP, USA - Jan 2nd 2015

– Victims of War'This War of Mine' is not really a game but a simulation of survival - what it is like to be the victim of warfare. Loosely based on the war in Bosnia you play 3 male characters struggling to survive in a war-torn urban landscape. You must contend with hunger, injury, sleep deprivation and death I don't know if a character ever wins because the odds of your survival are definitely slim and I've never reached a satisfactory conclusion. The game is drawn in bleak atmospheric black, grey, and white shadows and the destroyed city landscape is bleak. The characters are silhouettes that are often in shadow and dimly lit. 'This War of Mind' is an eye-opening experience for those used to games such as 'Call of Duty' and other shooters like it. Here you play the victim caught between deadly forces. Your character must daily choose between difficult moral choices in order to survive. The player must often make choices of life and death, your life and well as others. There are no correct decisions and every decision has a consequence. You eventually end up realizing that you never had real good choices in the first place. As grim as real war, this simulation will be an eye-opener for those who have never experienced it. The developers wisely limited the reality of warfare in order to make the game playable without turning users away. It is clear that the underlining message is that warfare has many many victims but some victims are missing from gameplay. Other real victims of war such as women and children are not in the game. Adding this reality or war victimhood would probably have been too much for players to take. The game has 2 major problems which, when fixed, will make this a 5 star game. The first problem is that the darkness of the screen and size of the text makes the game difficult to play on a small screen. My 13" MacBook screen was almost too small to play it on. My much larger iMac would have been ideal but I could not play it on my older iMac because there was not enough graphic RAM. This problem was not disclosed on all potential purchase sites. There is supposed to be a fix for this problem with the release of version 1.2 but that version is not available via the Mac App Store (version 1.02), version numbers are not given on the Mac Game Store, and the Mac Steam version is 1.22. 'This War of Mine' is highly recommended. But be careful of graphic requirements. My original purchase of this game was from the Mac App Store. by Elias Chapelle, USA - Jan 2nd 2015

– FrustratingUnlike helivoy, I haven't any issues saving games or using inventory, and there are quite a few save points so if you have to leave the game you just have to make sure to walk through one of the set points to save your progress. This has worked okay for me. The puzzles, however, are absurd. Several make no sense and just require a long and more or less arbitrary series of actions. (So far, for those who know the game, the lemming puzzle and the clock puzzle are especially infuriating). Any game may have one or two dud puzzles, but this is just one after another. I liked the first Syberia but this is pretty bad. And I know it is just a game, but a little bit of effort could have avoided cartoonish characters like the caricatural two-dimensional monks and the offensive portrayal of an intellectually handicapped character. by NorthernSpruce, Canada - Jan 2nd 2015

– Good game but buggy in later stagesI can echo word for word tdschmalz's review. This is a great, fun little game and for the price it's well worth it, but the bug of the invisible ships has prevented me from finishing the game so far. by raaoo, United Kingdom - Jan 2nd 2015

– Great story, looks good, but not interactive enoughI enjoyed this game. I like what the developers are trying to do, and the story is quite beautiful. The house is atmospheric and mysterious. However the story is quite linear and when you can move around freely there isn't really that much to do. Many interactive objects (folders, toys, cups) have no purpose at all. So the base premise and story are great, but it could have been fleshed out so much more. by raaoo, United Kingdom - Jan 2nd 2015

– Kid Iota submitted the following review for Grand Theft Auto 3: A classic still playable - Well, this game is very old really, although not for Mac gamers. This has an advantage: you can be sure that the game will run smoothly on your system. But disadvantages are many: games made ten years ago were not as professionals as today are. Few can pass the test of time, but this is one of them. Graphics are extremely outdated, but you can see them at 1920x1080 resolultion, which added to the simple but beautiful lighting effects, make the gaming experience immersive, beleieve it or not. The story reminds of Scorsese's movies: you play the role of a hired assassin who works for different gangs in an American town and have to fight against gangsters from to the others gang. Policemen are always behind you too, but fortuately they look very silly at times. Gameplay is structured in missions, too short each one in my opinion, but you have to repeat them many times in order to succeed. Rewards come in form of cash, that you can use basically to buy weapons. Aside from the "story missions" and some "driver missions" (like driving an ambulance to carry people to the hospital) you can do other things: finding hidden drug packs scattererd throughout the city, doing some short massive assassinations against members of the other gangs and performing acrobatic car jumps in the style of 70's policemen TV series. This sounds exciting, but it isn't for me: I stick to the main missions to progress in the story. The driving part is very good and realistic, but shootings are too clumsy, as gameplay is in general. Characters' AI look hilarious at many times, with people comitting suicide everywhere for no particular reason. But despite all of this, the game offers you many things to keep you interested and wanting to finish one more mission and see what comes next. I abandoned the game at 35% or so of completion (and this took me one month of casual playing), but hardcore gamers are guaranteed to have many hours of fun. The value of this game is that it sat the basics of a new genre: the so-called "open world" games, but I am very skeptical about labels. If you haven't seen it yet you should give it a try or you will miss a piece of gaming history. |
