Sid Meier's Civilization V
 –

Crash prone

I can play for about 5-10 minutes. The diplomacy screens cause it to freeze every time. Go figure.

Best RTS since Total Annihilation

If RTS is your thing, this is an excellent title. There are a slew of vehicles, weapons, and missions - I'll be engrossed for a good long while. The strategic and tactical possibilities are very large. I often find myself thinking about my current mission while I'm doing other things, thinking up new ways to approach situations.

The UI is not the best I've ever seen, but it's decent enough. IMO a great addition would be the ability to make notes on the map, which you can do in the multiplayer version but not the single player. But it's a minor quibble. All the actions can be accomplished via a small block of buttons or with keyboard commands. The interface elements are compact and don't get in the way. I've found one small bug - the caps lock key is supposed to call aircraft, but doesn't.

The graphics are a bit dated, but well-crafted and attractive. It's all 2D isometric, which is really all that's needed. My only real complaint is that some of the animations are so small it can be hard to tell exactly what a unit is doing. Sometimes I'll sit and watch an artillery unit for several seconds before realizing that yes, they are responding to my fire command.

The weapons sounds are nice and satisfying. The voices can get a little annoying after a while, but I generally play with the sound off anyway.

It's been pretty stable and plenty fast on my 1.67MHz G4 laptop and my quad-core G5 desktop. It seems to run at the same speed on both platforms - smooth but not breakneck. I haven't had to adjust. I've had it crash to the desktop twice - once on each machine.

Overall, I think it's a good buy. I've been looking for a good RTS for a long while, and this seems to be it.
