I wasn't sure at first - pretty gruesome atmosphere - but this game roped me in quickly. Many, many hours of game play, interesting twist on H0G scenes, good mix of puzzles, tons of tasks. Take notes! The bonus chapter was also long and very well done.
A refreshing change up in game play. Takes a while to get the hang of it, but the more you play, the more you will love this game. By the end of the demo you will be hooked. Great game!
Very enjoyable, pleasant, charming, delightful, light hearted, sweet, cleverly constructed game. Not very long or challenging, but pretty to look at. Just a lovely little diversion.
The card game is much the same as that in Fairway Solitaire. Sand traps and water hazards are replaced by ice and rock. Golf courses are replaced with areas of Avalon to be saved, Instead of the Pro Shop for new equipment, you go to a Magic Shop for rabbit's feet and Runes.
As for game play, Also similar. Move cards of higher or lower number to the base deck. You can put aces on kings and kings on aces. Each area of Avalon requires you to accomplish some aspect(s) of the game - run of xx cards, score xxxx points, etc.
Avalon has wild cards (they come in very handy), and Magic Cards to collect. Avalon also has locked cards to add to the challenge. There is a story - you must return the magic cards to the Druids - okay, not the high point.
In Avalon you earn points based on play - each level has 10 hands. Each level has certain goals. You do not repeat any hand in the level, but if you do not reach the goals, you must replay all 10 hands again. You earn points that buy a variety of power ups. There is some logic in how you use the points. Getting all the power ups is not necessary, but at least there is a purpose in earning points. There are 13 possible achievements. I earned 12, and believe the one I did not get required a certain very pricey power up.
So, Avalon - it's not too difficult at all, in the beginning. For the first 2/3 of the game I never repeated a level. Then everything changed. Nothing was impossible, but the last level took me as long as the rest of the game put together - at least it seemed that way.
Overall, there's many hours of play time, it is basically relaxing, certainly has replay value, the artwork is pleasant enough. There are no voice overs as in Fairway Solitaire, nor any of that quirky humor, but it's still a decent way to spend some free time.
The game style is quite unique in tone. Straight Adventure - no H0G scenes. There is a puzzle at every turn. Nothing hair pulling but attention is required, lots to do, and the story is curious to say the least. The atmosphere is gloomy and creepy, but the game's author has a sense of humor as well. I quite enjoyed this game and recommend it.
Run, don't walk, to demo this not so little game. It is an indie title. A little bit like Machinarium in a much happier, more colorful place.
The artwork is so charming. The tasks - well, you do have to find objects, but absolutely not in junk piles. Then you use those things to solve puzzles. In one case you have to solve a puzzle to solve another one.
The game has absolutely no directions - half the fun was figuring out what to do.
Honest, just play the demo - put on your thinking cap; it will make you smile.
Don't hesitate to get this game. It was long, challenging, beautifully drawn, interesting puzzles, intriguing story. The bonus chapter was a follow up on one of the main characters - well done, brought the story further along.
This is a beautiful game, a lot of tasks, some challenge. Parts 2 and 3 are not quite as strong as part 1, but all were good. The bonus chapter may be the best part of the whole game. Definitely several hours of decent game play.
Is this a horrible game - no. And the locked game play that says Arcade is a curious mystery. Even the story has some verve - the man who would be pirate has a very tolerant daughter - I like her.
If a person were new to H0Gs and wanted a taste of every possible way items can be found (list, riddles, flashlight, silhouette, put into the scene) this game would be it. That person would also be pleased with the occasional puzzle. Maybe even be curious enough about the characters to enthusiastically finish the H0G scene for the reward of the next cut scene. That person is not me. I am H0Gged out.
I hate to fail, but with the advent of games that make us think - logic puzzles, using inventory, non linear tasks - I am so less inclined to berate myself for not finding that one last item in a pile of junk. Problem is I'm no longer enthusiastic about looking for that first item.
But that's just me. Objectively, I would give this 3 out of five The artwork is grainy, some scenes very dark. A little more story between H0G scenes would be nice. But it certainly has a variety of seek and find scenes, and puzzles, and apparently some extra game play to unlock.
If you still love H0G searches for their own sake, it's worth a demo.
This is a very curious game which I quite enjoyed. Some might complain there is too much dialogue, but I wouldn't. The CE has some interesting extras and the bonus chapter adds to the story. There are many hours of game play that require you pay attention to accomplish all the tasks. (closer to 5 stars than 4).
This game is so good it defies any need for a review! If I said I can actually put it ahead of MCF 13th Skull and on an even par with MCF Dire Grove, would that be enough? Just get it and enjoy it!
IMHO the biggest problem with this game is the mediocre artwork. If it was a Wow! to look at the rest would get higher marks. There are some decent things - well certainly as decent as many other Adventure H0Gs we've played. It is not a short game. It has an interactive map that allows you to jump from one area to another. It has an unlimited, graduated hint system for the few puzzles that might stump you. It has an interesting mystery to be solved, with a contemporary theme. It has bonus tasks. It has iH0 searches with a twist. Unfortunately that's where the fuzzy, less than inspired artwork really gets annoying.
$5 an episode plus the nostalgia value - I think it was worth it. I'm looking forward to the next episode. True - there is a lot of dialogue, but you still had to think some in places.
Excellent fun game!! Definitely give this one a chance. The artwork may take a little getting used to, but it won't take long. Great story and animation. Just when you think the end is in sight there's more to do. Don't pass on trying this one!
Colorful, humorous, bright, cheerful little game. A nice change from all the dark, ominous, gory games we have been seeing. Artwork is charming, the antagonists romp through the castle is fun but over too soon. Still and all, this little adventure deserves 4 stars for delightful.
Artwork 5 stars, game performance 1 star. I concur with Nicole. I have a 24" iMac with 4 GB memory running OS 10.6.5. Lag time between scenes is slow enough to make one think the game has frozen. Not the case, but that does not make for a very pleasant gaming experience. Also agree - could be a good game.
I hate time management games but I love this one just because the characters are so cute. And, unless you must have gold stars to feel accomplished, there is no time limit to complete a level. So, I do not get that tense "beat the clock or die" feeling that some TM games cause. U'm giving it 5 stars for charming. Call me crazy.
In truth just another game unless the mystery cases intrigue you enough. Not a bad game, just more of the same - relatively easy searches and puzzles. Decent art work, a lot of dialogue. If you watched the series way back when, there might be that nostalgia fetaure that draws you in.
