Great horror games

Aside from some rather quirky UI issues (always a pet peeve of mine), these are some of the best horror games ever. The stories and ambience really get creepy. Don't fight...hide and run!!!!

Eschalon: Book I
 –

Could be so much more

The game really needs scalable graphics, or at least some screen resolution options as it's microscopic on my screen and blowing it up just blurs it out. If this was the early 1990s it'd hold up against the Ultima series...but it doesn't.

Guns of Icarus

Fun for a quick pickup

This is one of those "I've got 15 minutes" games. It's fun and very challenging, but don't expect deep.

Machinarium

Stunningly creative

What a blast to play and challenging too. The art, sound and story is charming as hell. My only major issue was the quirkiness of the flash-based mouse-interactions; they're a bit too specific and vague at times.

Torchlight
 –

Been there, done that

Graphically it's pretty, but there's not enough variety of character types or creatures to hold me - the rogue, fighter, wizard model is done to death. I've played plenty of Diablo clones over the years, including the Fate (by the same people I think) and this one didn't feel engaging or original. Still very playable though.

FATE
 –

Basic, but fun

Unlike Torchlight, I really liked this game when it came out. It was simple and basic as a Diablo-style clone, and cute ta boot. It's dated now, but still very playable.

Kult: Heretic Kingdoms

Wanted to like this more

Story was interesting, but the gameplay and mechanics are a mess. I gave it a good shot - as did my wife - but the frustration with the UI quirks made me call it quits.

Geneforge 5: Overthrow
 –

It's still got some life

I think I've played all the Geneforge games; some not to completion due to their length. This is one is balanced and challenging. If you can overlook the dated graphics you'll be rewarded with a great RPG. That said, I'd really love to see Spiderware Software reinvent their UI - it's so 1990s!
