The 7th Guest
 –

A classic is back!

Having been initially ported to iOS, The 7th Guest is now once again available for the Mac. Updated to run on current hardware, this version duplicates the original experience of exploring the Stauf Mansion almost exactly. Almost.

For various technical reasons, two puzzles are inaccessible in this version; the microscope puzzle from the lab and the piano puzzle from the music room. When all other requirements are met, these two puzzles will show as having been completed.

In addition, there is no option to play the game in full screen mode, and there are some frustrating moments where the game will not recognize repeated mouse clicks. I ran into some audio sync problems on my MacBook pro during the live action sequences, and some animations run too fast, but the developers have included a feature to slow the game down from a drop down menu. That fixed the animation issue, but not the audio sync problems.

Also included with the game are scanned versions of material that was included in the original packaging, and a short "Making of..." video from 1993. All in all, the game is a wonderful trip down memory lane for those who remember its initial release, and not a bad value at all for the asking price. Only the small, nagging technical problems kept this from a better rating than I gave it.

The Great International Word Search
 –

A classic word search

Prepare to spend several eye-blurring hours on this classic word search. Many of the words are unfamiliar, making for some challenging searches. Sometimes the game was a bit picky about word selection, especially with words along the edges.

The "story", unfortunately, plays a secondary role, serving as little more than a way to move from puzzle to puzzle. You can have up to three hints per puzzle-the two you always start each new puzzle with, plus one hidden in each puzzle. Beware, though. While hints carry over to the mini-games, they don't carry over from one puzzle to the next, and the mini-games are few and far between.

All in all, its a good, challenging word search... but one that could have taken better advantage of the medium.
