SO/ SO GAME

The story line was alright, I understood it well enough. A person could catch on quickly. But that is where it became problematic. From the first hidden object puzzle to the last the pictures were grainy, very dull, and very hard to see to find them. Lots of dark areas, every once in a while hard to know where the story was trying to lead you! It was easy to get from one screen to another, no problem there. With lots and lots of frustrating crashes. Some times the game would not let you do the task it was asking you to do. I'm glad that I didn't pay full price on the game because that would have been another frustration. All in All, it was a SO/ SO Game.

House of 1000 Doors: The Palm of Zoroaster Collector's Edition
 –

Liked it, good game.

I give it 5 stars. Fun to play. Play time was satifying. It did not take days to beat just hours. Which for me is good. There was a basic hidden object format, but the actual game play was great. The different "worlds"( for lack of a better word) were just long enough not to get boring. I found the game to be satisfying. I found myself talking to the screen while trying to get through the task. (I hope other gamers do that, and admit it LOL!). It felt good to play this game. And I was happy to play the whole game to the end without problems! I give this game 5 stars, graphics were supurb. I have recommended this game to other H.O. players! I am looking forward to the next 1000 doors!!

Heroes of Hellas 3: Athens

Sadly prone to crashes

(I'm giving this three stars because if you're happy to only play up to level 6.4, it's still a pretty neat game concept; the crashes don't render it unplayable as such.)

Well, yes. Level 6.4, where you need to clear everything and ask Boreas for help three times, and every single time bar one the game locked up, grabbed 100.2% of processor power on my Macbook, and stayed there. Bar once, when I wanted to document this crash again (a year after first reporting it) and much to my suprise, was transported to the next level.
Imagine my annoyance when after finishing I started playing the bonus level and the game crashed with a failed assertion every single time I tried to play the first bonus level. Every. Single. Time.
There's much to like about this game - some of the graphics are a bit twee, but there's a storyline and varied gameplay and you can make some decisions about which buildings to erect (though they seem mainly cosmetic); tiles, boards and gameplay are well-designed (a couple of levels are a bit tedious, but this clearly has been playtested and is well balanced) - but with persistent, repeatable crashes on more than one OS I hesitated about giving it even three stars.

Repetitive

Graphics are nice, but it is just repetitive, doing the same thing again and again. Not creative at all. Very disappointing

Enjoyable play

Nice graphics. Great that you can speed up the play. More different comments by the players would be better. Overall, a fun game.

Solitaire Mystery: Stolen Power
 –

Short and not very interesting

Time to complete game: 90 min.

There are two kinds of Solitaire, one golf-based, the other a mahjongg kind. Those are interspesed with some HOG scenes and a very few puzzles.

Card levels not completed have to replayed once, then can be skipped. Only needed the replay option with the mahjongg kind and skipped once. Levels are repetitive. There was no time pressure anywhere in the game.

The objective is to collect a missing deck of solitaire cards. The story is rather thin and not very believable. The end comes suddenly and seems rushed.

Nice enough for a miserable winter sunday but nothing to get me hooked.

Commander: Conquest of the Americas

A Decent Little Game

This game has it's issues, but I don't think it deserves the low rating that it got. If you want sea and land based combat in the age of sail, buy CA's Empire or Napoleon, both great games but have a rather simplified trade system.

If you want something a little different with a heavier focus on trade and mercantilism, this is a good choice. The markets are a little tricky to figure out, but there is an interesting challenge there trying to get your revenue producing colonies up and running while managing your fleets and engaging in combat with rivals.

You have a little more input on ship design than you do in other games (ships can be tailored and customized to allow more guns, cargo, etc) and captains and crew memebers can be assigned to fleets to improve business or combat.

It's a little less action-packed than some other similar games out there if you tend to shy away from combat, but it certainly is not a terrible complement to your existing games library if you have found that you enjoy playing games that simulate this era. You can have a little bit of fun during combat commanding from the bridge of your vessels too, although the visuals are not quite as detailed as Empire or Napoleon.

I certainly got more than my share of enjoyment from the PC version, so I bought this a second time for my Mac.

Diablo III
 –

Used to be passable, but has improved a lot since.

I purchased this off the official blizzard site at launch years ago and have purchased the expansion as well. It suffered from a lot of problems in its first year and as a result many of the official reviews of the game are very poor. For a better view of the game in its current form check out reviews of the expansion, Reaper of Souls.

This is a continuation of the series that popularized if not spawned the hack & slash & loot subgenre of games. Other notable games that have followed in that theme have included the very popular Borderlands series, clones like Titan Quest, and way too many others to mention.

Story: There really isn't much of a story to the entire Diablo series, but essentially evil returns and Deckard Cain and his niece(?) are trying to find the source but need your help involving the investigation of a meteor and a mysterious figure.

Gameplay: It's still very much a point and click diablo game like its predecessors, but mechanics have changed quite a bit. Most notably is the skill system which no longer depends on points but rather slotted skills that can be changed while out of combat. A lot of people were in uproar over this initially, but it definitely helps with experimenting different builds. Otherwise, this is the same diablo we know and love, the click to attack/move/pick up lootfest with the exception that gold is automatically picked up.

Design: The isometric view returns but with full 3D models, improved lighting, and overall improved graphics. Overall the visual upgrade is subtle, and quite frankly the game is by no means cutting edge on the graphics front. Nonetheless, with the newly introduced physics system there will be too much debris flying around to spend time examining textures for more than a glance. The sound is stellar as in previous iterations. The soundtrack is suitable for every location with that mix of creepy despair that the series is known for.

Overall: If you enjoyed the previous games in the series, there is no reason you shouldn't buy this. In its current form (which is nowhere near what it was at launch) it is the quintessential Diablo game.

Very enjoyable

Excellent little platform-action-puzzle-role fantasy game. Visuals are good, with baroque surroundings, and gameplay is original and enough varied to keep yourself entertained for quite a while. I've found it very well crafted, including puzzles and levels, which is the core matter. You play with three characters, each one with its own upgradeable abilities, that you can switch at any time. It offers you four difficulty levels, so you can always try harder.
In the negative side, the story and settings are too commonplace, including the nearly-unbearable music, just your typical fairy-tale melody. Also, the famous "physics-emulation" looks sometimes more moon-based than earth-based, but these are minor issues for an indie game. Overall, a very good game that's worth the price. Get it and yout won't regret.

Rescue Team 4
 –

A great game just got better!

A challenging and rewarding time management game series just got a whole lot better. Your rescue team must battle through earthquakes, landslides, snow & ice, volcanic eruptions, floods & fire in order to rescue people and pets who have become trapped or injured. The inclusion of the 'zombie geddon' and 'pet apocalypse' levels (level 29, my favourite) clearly make this game the best in the series so far. The rescue team can call up boats and helicopters to help step up the rescue efforts. All the levels are well thought out and not repetitive, all requiring slightly different tactics in order to complete the challenge in time. The inclusion of the best time recorder is excellent as this enables you to see your progress. Great fun, plenty of replay value. The sounds and effects are just right. The extra awards for playing certain levels in different ways was another positive improvement. The only odd thing about this game is the 'Jesus Moment' in level 26, but that just made me laugh so not a problem!

Fun and Creative Idea

Love the graphics and the idea of the game. I got it free with another purchase. The only think I didn't like was that I quickly became bored with the same thing happening over and over. But that's just me!
