HOI2 is far superior

The new technology tree is interesting and I do not mind it. But the new AI for your Allies is terrible. You can ask them to defend or attack a province but there is no quarantee they will play ball. Stick to the older version and hope HOI4 is better.
HOI2 I would give 5 stars. -
Hearts of Iron III: Semper Fi

Do not be mislead by this title. It is not about the US Marines in WW2, although they play a role if you are playing the US.
Rather, this is the most realistic global WW2 strategy simulation ever. It plays on PC or Mac. It is multiplayer as well as single player with a very refined AI engine. The level of detail is overwhelming and historically accurate. While not completely historically perfect for each country (in terms of unit and equipment), the minor issues are negligible. For the total purist, there are several downloads available on the wiki site to tweek the game to your liking.
The power of the game is that the AI plays every country that was involved in WW2. Thus, the decisions you make as a player have consequences far beyond the immediate circumstances. This is a strategy game after all, not a shooter. It will require a significant learning curve to play well, but the training program is helpfull and several smaller scenarios are good for learning.
My favorite scenario is the build up to war starting in 1936. This allows you to structure your entire country to meet the looming threats. I have played several countries this way and have found the UK, the USSR and Nationalist China to be the most challenging and rewarding. Those who think they can save Poland or France by superior decisions will be dissapointed- there is no way they can hold off the German juggernaut. Likewise, the USA will win even with bad decisions because of it geographic isolation and industrial capability. The three I mentioned have the most interesting challenges from a strategic point of view.
Twenty years ago, one would need a networked supercomputer and room full of military officers to pull of what this does on your laptop.
I strongly rrecommend this to anyone interested in a truely accurate military strategy game.14 out of 16 shoppers found this helpful. Was this helpful? Yes No
