The Path is a horror game inspired by older versions of Little Red Riding hood, set in modern day. The Path offers an atmospheric experience of exploration, discovery and introspection through a unique form of gameplay, designed to immerse you deeply into its dark themes. Every interaction in the game expresses an aspect of the narrative. The six protagonists each have their own age and personality and allow the player to live through the tale in different ways. Most of the story, however, relies on your active imagination.

The Path is designed with accessibility in mind. There are no ticking clocks or monsters to defeat. No hard puzzles will ever halt your progress. Most activities in the game are entirely optional and voluntary. The player has all the freedom in the world to explore and experience.

The Path is an independently created video game. It was developed with digital distribution in mind. The characters in this virtual world, including the player's avatars, are governed by a form of artificial intelligence that gives them some autonomy. As a result, nobody knows exactly what you will encounter on your journeys.

Next to the multi-layered stylized graphics, The Path features a continuous soundtrack composed by goth rock diva Jarboe (ex-Swans). In fact, there are hardly any sound effects in the game. Instead the music is continuously changing according to what is happening in the game. Like the behaviours of the characters, the music too is never exactly the same twice.

  1. One of My Favorite Games

The Path is magical, haunting in a sense that you become afraid to turn the lights out at night, and slightly monotonous. This isn't about hacking away at something, but about a darker interpretation of the classic tale. I was addicted and mesmerized by the intricate leaves and scenery. I have played through to the endings several times, each time even more scared than the last time I played. Grandma's house builds suspense by leading you through winding passages with sharp turns and deadly surprises. A real treat for horror lovers.

The fealing you have playing this game is unique. Its like heaven and hell mixed inside one of the most classical fairy tales.

Theres no evil besides the one your mind feals.

Like a painting the meaning of this game is open to any kind of interpretation.

Yeah, I get it: this isn't really a "game" in the traditional sense. In fact, it isn't really a game at all.

All you do is wander around the forest trying to collect a particular kind of flower or certain "artifacts" (like the trucker cap a guy who is chopping wood is wearing), even though the reason for this is never made clear. If you go straight to "grandma's house" or get there before it thinks you should, the game tells you that you've FAILED, even though it never tells you what you are supposed to have accomplished beforehand.
There is a "save" option, however, other than remembering all the little objects you have already collected, you have to start the game over - even having to choose a character - from the beginning every time. There is no way to turn off the annoying music other than to kill the volume on your computer altogether.
The little girl character doesn't seem to do anything other than hug you as long as you'll stand there, or drag you all the way back to "the path" - which is totally annoying since the game clearly wants you to do other things before you get to "grandma's house" - see above. And while the description claims that gameplay is different depending on which character you choose, frankly, I don't see one bit of difference from one character to the next.
